Zora Neale Hurston with a new book? I know, I was confused too since she lived in the 20th century. Ibram X. Kendi, the famous author behind How to Be an Antiracist, adapted Hurston's powerful story Their Eyes Were Watching God for this poetic picture book. This story, told by a mighty river narrating to a small brook, is about a young Afro-Indigenous girl, Magnolia, who longs for freedom. In her quest to be free, Magnolia sets off on a journey that will prove just how brave you can be when leading with your heart. The story is a profound reminder of the past, a strength of a people, and that there is no force strong enough to stop love. I take every opportunity to make wisecracks, but this story is too moving and too important for me to make one. I recommend everyone read it.
